Glossary

Solid Wood Floors
Made from a single piece of wood. Not appropriate for use below ground level.
Engineered Wood Floors
Layers of wood pressed together. More dimensionally stable than solid wood, so it can be used with radiant heating. It expands and contracts less than solid wood, making it suitable for basements, kitchens, baths, and utility rooms. Usually more expensive than solid wood.
Acrylic-Impregnated Floors
Acrylics injected into the wood. Creates a super hard, durable floor. Often used in commercial settings.
Strip Flooring
Linear flooring usually in widths of 1 1/2, 2 1/4, or 3 1/4 inches. Promotes the illusion of a larger space when used in smaller rooms.
Plank Flooring
Linear flooring with a wider width. Common widths include 3, 4, 5, or 6 inches.
Parquet Flooring
Series of wood flooring pieces that create a geometric design.
